Key Expressions
Expressing care and attentiveness
미리 사 놨어
"bought [it] in advance and set it aside"
Used to show proactive care — the speaker anticipated someone else's need and acted before being asked. In romance contexts, it signals deep, quiet devotion.
비 올 것 같아서 우산 미리 사 놨어요.
I bought an umbrella in advance because I thought it might rain.
배에 대고 있어
"hold it against your stomach"
A gentle imperative used when tending to someone. The casual but caring tone signals intimate concern rather than medical distance.
핫 팩 여기 있어요, 배에 대고 있어요.
Here's a hot pack — hold it against your stomach.
Confessing romantic feelings indirectly
나 [사람] 좋아해
"I like [person]"
The most common, direct expression for a romantic confession in Korean. Said plainly without formal endings here, it sounds sincere and vulnerable rather than shy.
사실 저 오래전부터 선생님 좋아했어요.
Actually, I've liked you for a long time.
자꾸만 착각하고 싶어져
"I keep wanting to delude myself"
Expresses an involuntary, recurring emotional impulse — specifically, wanting to misread neutral actions as romantic signals. The -고 싶어지다 construction highlights that the desire arises on its own, making it feel confessional and helpless.
그 사람이 웃어 줄 때마다 자꾸만 착각하고 싶어져요.
Every time that person smiles at me, I keep wanting to read too much into it.
Referencing shared history
모르는 게 없는 것도
"the fact that there is nothing you don't know (about me)"
A deeply intimate expression meaning the other person knows the speaker completely. Listed alongside other evidence of care, it functions as proof of closeness that makes romantic feelings difficult to suppress.
저에 대해 모르는 게 없는 것도 다 같이 일했기 때문이잖아요.
The fact that there's nothing you don't know about me is also because we've worked together.
같이 일하면서 쌓아 온 시간
"the time built up while working together"
쌓아 오다 (to have built up over time) combined with a nominalised phrase emphasises the weight and accumulation of a shared past. It frames closeness as the natural, unavoidable result of time rather than choice.
우리가 함께 쌓아 온 시간이 있으니까 서로 잘 이해할 수 있어요.
Because of the time we've built up together, we can understand each other well.
Grammar Patterns
때문인 거 알아 / 때문인 거 알다
'I know it's because of' — acknowledging a cause
This structure combines -기/N 때문이다 (it is because of ~) with the nominaliser -인 거 and the verb 알다 to mean 'I know it is because of ~'. The speaker uses it to pre-emptively name the rational explanation for someone's behaviour, even while admitting they struggle to accept that explanation emotionally. It signals self-awareness and emotional intelligence.
Practice sentences
네가 걱정해서 그러는 거 때문인 거 알아요, 그래도 상처가 돼요.
I know it's because you're worried, but it still hurts.
💡 Don't confuse -기 때문에 (causal connector) with -기 때문인 거 알다 (acknowledging a cause as a complete thought). The latter requires 거 알다 at the end to form the 'I know that it's because' meaning.
자꾸만 -고 싶어지다
'Keep wanting to' — involuntary recurring desire
자꾸만 (keep doing, repeatedly) combined with -고 싶어지다 (to come to want to do) describes a desire that arises repeatedly and feels involuntary — the speaker cannot help it. While -고 싶다 is a simple desire, -고 싶어지다 emphasises that the want emerges on its own, which carries a helpless or confessional tone especially in emotional contexts.
Practice sentences
그 노래를 들으면 자꾸만 울고 싶어져요.
Whenever I hear that song, I keep wanting to cry.
💡 자꾸만 intensifies the repetition compared to 자꾸. Do not drop -지다 and say just -고 싶어 — that changes the meaning from an involuntary arising desire to a simple present want.
-아/어서 못 하다
'Can't do X because of Y' — emotional/physical inability
The connective -아/어서 links a cause to its consequence, and when the consequence is 못 하다, it expresses an inability that directly results from that cause. Unlike -기 때문에 못 하다 (more formal/written), -아서 못 하다 sounds immediate and emotional, and is frequently used when feelings prevent action.
Practice sentences
너무 긴장돼서 말을 못 하겠어요.
I'm so nervous that I can't get the words out.
💡 Remember that 못 하다 expresses inability (external or emotional), not refusal. If you mean 'won't do' rather than 'can't do', use 안 하다 instead.
Cultural Notes
핫 팩 (hot packs) as everyday care
In Korean daily life, 핫 팩 (disposable heat packs) are commonly used to relieve stomach cramps and menstrual pain. Carrying one for a colleague—especially a woman—is read as an intimate and thoughtful gesture that goes far beyond professional courtesy. Seong-hyeon having one ready in his bag without being asked is precisely the kind of wordless care that triggers Ji-won's confession.
위경련 and stress-related illness in Korean work culture
Stress-induced conditions like 위경련 (gastric spasms) and 신경성 (psychosomatic) illness are widely acknowledged in Korean society as real and common consequences of overwork and emotional pressure. Saying '그냥 신경성이야' (it's just stress-related) is a culturally familiar self-diagnosis, reflecting an awareness that the body responds to psychological strain — and also that many Koreans push through physical symptoms rather than stop working.
Confession etiquette — the indirect build-up
Ji-won's confession follows a common Korean romantic confession structure: instead of jumping straight to '좋아해', she first explains context, evidence, and her own reasoning. This multi-layered approach ('네가 나를 챙겨 주는 것도… 모르는 게 없는 것도… 시간 때문인 거 알아') shows emotional maturity and pre-empts misunderstanding. It also signals that she is not looking for reciprocation — her confession is an explanation for a decision already made.
원효 대사 해골 물 (The tale of Monk Wonhyo)
Seong-hyeon's joke about 양배추즙 tasting like 원효 대사 해골 물 refers to a famous Korean Buddhist legend: the monk Wonhyo drank water from a skull in the dark and found it delicious, only to be disgusted when he saw what it was by daylight. The story is a classic teaching on the mind creating perception. Using it as a joke about the taste of cabbage juice is a light cultural reference that shows the characters' educated, easy rapport with each other.
