Key Expressions
Realizing or guessing a situation
-나 보다
"it seems like -; looks like -"
Used when the speaker makes a casual inference based on observed evidence. Common in banmal speech and internal monologue.
문이 잠겼나 봐, 아무도 없는 것 같아.
Looks like the door is locked — seems like nobody's home.
Formal self-introduction
-(이)라고 합니다
"I am called -; my name is -"
Standard polite formula for introducing one's name to a stranger or superior; more formal than 이에요/예요.
저는 김민준이라고 합니다, 잘 부탁드립니다.
My name is Kim Minjun; I am in your care.
만나 뵙게 되어 영광입니다
"It is an honor to have come to meet you"
A highly formal, slightly stiff greeting used when meeting someone greatly respected for the first time. Here used somewhat comically by Seonghyeon.
이렇게 만나 뵙게 되어 영광입니다, 교수님.
It is an honor to meet you like this, Professor.
Giving warnings or conditions
-기 전에
"before -ing"
Attaches to a verb stem to indicate that something should happen prior to another action; here used to urge separation before feelings deepen.
너무 늦기 전에 솔직하게 말해.
Tell the truth before it gets too late.
Expressing regret about a past action
-아/어 놓을걸
"I should have done - (and left it done)"
Expresses regret that the speaker did not do something in advance that would have been useful. The -놓다 element implies an action done and left in a state of readiness.
우산 챙겨 놓을걸, 비가 오네.
I should have brought an umbrella — it's raining.
Grammar Patterns
-(으)ㄹ 테니까
Speaker's strong intention / assured condition
This pattern combines -(으)ㄹ 것이다 (intention/certainty) with the causal connector -니까 to mean 'since I will / because I'm going to.' It signals that the speaker is making a confident assertion or promise that provides a reason for a following action. In dialogue it often carries the nuance of reassurance or warning.
Practice sentences
내가 먼저 가 있을 테니까 천천히 와.
I'll head there first, so take your time.
곧 끝날 테니까 조금만 기다려.
It'll be over soon, so just wait a little.
💡 Don't confuse with -니까 alone (reason/cause); -(으)ㄹ 테니까 specifically implies the speaker's will or strong expectation, not just a neutral fact.
-게 되어 [noun]입니다
Formal expression of circumstances leading to a result
-게 되다 expresses a change of state or a situation the speaker has come to be in (often beyond their full control). When followed by a formal noun like 영광 or 반가움, it creates a polite, humble-sounding phrase used especially in first meetings or formal contexts. The 되어 form is the connective form leading into the next clause.
Practice sentences
이렇게 함께 일하게 되어 정말 반갑습니다.
I am truly glad that we have come to work together like this.
발표를 맡게 되어 긴장됩니다.
I've come to be in charge of the presentation, so I'm nervous.
💡 The verb before -게 되다 should be in its base form; a common mistake is incorrectly attaching -게 되다 to a past tense stem.
-나 보다
Soft inference from observation
Attaches to an action or descriptive verb stem to express that the speaker is guessing or inferring something based on evidence. It is softer and more casual than -것 같다, and frequently appears in self-directed speech or internal monologue. The past inference form is -았/었나 보다.
Practice sentences
많이 피곤했나 봐, 바로 잠들었네.
You must have been really tired — you fell asleep right away.
이미 떠났나 봐, 아무도 없어.
Looks like they already left — nobody's here.
💡 나 보다 is for present/ongoing inference; use 았/었나 보다 when inferring about something that already happened. Don't use it for plans or intentions.
Cultural Notes
Unannounced parental visits in K-dramas
In Korean family culture, parents — especially fathers — may travel long distances to check on their adult children without prior notice, particularly when they sense a romantic involvement. This reflects a cultural expectation that parental oversight of major life decisions, including relationships, is legitimate well into adulthood. Taehwa's sudden appearance in Gongjin is treated as shocking but not unusual within the drama's logic.
직함 (titles) as relationship signals
Seonghyeon introduces himself as 대학 선배 (university senior) rather than just a friend or acquaintance. In Korea the 선배/후배 (senior/junior) bond from school is a recognized social relationship with implicit obligations and intimacy — enough to warrant a formal introduction to a parent. Identifying himself this way is both a strategic claim to legitimacy and a culturally understood social category.
아버님 vs 아버지
아버지 is the standard word for 'father' when referring to or addressing one's own father. 아버님 is the honorific form used when addressing or referring to someone else's father respectfully — for example, a suitor meeting his girlfriend's father. Seonghyeon's immediate use of 아버님 signals both politeness and a presumptuous bid for closeness.
The slap-yourself comedy of second-hand embarrassment
혜진 slapping herself after the kiss ('어머, 나 미쳤어') is a recognizable K-drama comedic beat where a character physically punishes themselves to snap back to reality. This kind of performative self-shock is deeply embedded in Korean romantic-comedy acting style and is understood by audiences as endearing flustered behavior rather than anything distressing.
