Grammar Patterns
-아/어서
Causal / Sequential Connector
This ending connects two clauses where the first is the cause or a preceding action leading to the second. In emotional storytelling it is used heavily to chain personal backstory. Note that tense is NOT marked on this ending — the tense is carried by the final verb.
Practice sentences
늦게 일어나서 버스를 놓쳤어요.
I woke up late so I missed the bus.
너무 피곤해서 일찍 잤어요.
I was so tired that I went to bed early.
💡 Do not add -았/었 before -서; never say -었어서 — the tense belongs on the final verb only.
-(으)ㄹ 거 같다
Soft Conjecture / Prediction
This pattern expresses a speaker's guess or impression about a situation, making statements softer and less assertive. It is especially common in casual conversation to hedge opinions or reactions.
Practice sentences
오늘 비가 올 거 같아요.
I think it might rain today.
그 영화 재미있을 거 같아요.
I think that movie will be fun.
💡 The future/conjecture form is -(으)ㄹ 거 같다, not -겠 같다; avoid mixing them.
-(이)라도
'At least / Even just' with nouns
Attached directly to a noun, -(이)라도 softens a statement to mean 'even just this' or 'at least this much.' It expresses a concession — acknowledging something is not ideal but still has value. Very common in emotionally nuanced or consoling speech.
Practice sentences
시간이 없으면 문자라도 보내 줘요.
If you don't have time, at least send a text.
물이라도 한 잔 드릴까요?
Can I at least offer you a glass of water?
💡 -(이)라도 attaches to nouns; don't confuse it with the verb ending -더라도 which means 'even if.'
Cultural Notes
언니 as an address for older women
Korean speakers use kinship terms like 언니 (older sister, used by females) even between non-relatives. Ju-ri calling Hye-jin 언니 reflects warmth and the beginning of a trust-based relationship. Using this term signals that the social distance is softening into something more personal.
Grandmother's comment: '신세 망쳤다'
In older Korean generational thinking, a child born around the time of the mother's death could be blamed through superstition or traditional beliefs about fate. While this attitude is now widely criticised, the grandmother's remark represents a painful real-world experience some Korean children have faced. Hye-jin's quiet reaction signals she understands the cultural weight without endorsing it.
덧니 (snaggle tooth) as a beauty point
In Korean and broader East Asian pop culture, a slightly protruding canine tooth — called 덧니 — is often considered charming or cute rather than a flaw. It appears frequently in idol culture as an endearing feature. Hye-jin's comment that Ju-ri's 덧니 is cute (귀엽다) is a genuine compliment, not sarcasm.
팩폭 and 마상 — youth slang
팩폭 (팩트+폭력, 'fact violence') refers to brutal but true statements, and 마상 (마음의 상처, 'heart wound') means emotional hurt from something said. Both are widely used among younger Koreans online and in casual speech. Ju-ri using these terms marks her as a contemporary teenager, and Hye-jin repeating 마상 with a laugh shows she finds it funny and endearing.
