I tried every way I could to hush up the rumor, but it was already too late.
혼자 보기 아깝다

이 영화 진짜 혼자 보기 아깝다, 같이 봐야 했는데
This movie is too good to watch alone — we should have seen it together.
Gossiping and speculating about others
케미가 1도 없다
"chemistry 1 degree not exist"
A colloquial way to say two people have absolutely zero romantic chemistry. '1도' (literally 'not even 1 degree') intensifies the negation for emphasis.
저 두 배우 케미가 1도 없어서 드라마가 재미없더라
Those two actors have zero chemistry, so the drama wasn't fun to watch.
잘 어울리다
"well match/suit"
To be a good match or look good together, used for couples, clothing, or pairings. Very common in gossip about potential couples.
저 둘이 진짜 잘 어울려 보이지 않아?
Don't those two look like a really good match?
부성애가 느껴지다
"paternal-love be-felt"
Used humorously to say that a gesture or interaction feels fatherly rather than romantic — a way to shut down ship-talk about a couple.
걔가 나한테 잘해 줄 때 설레는 게 아니라 부성애가 느껴져
When he's kind to me I don't feel butterflies — I just feel paternal love.
Expressing disbelief or impossibility
그럴 리가 없는데
"that-will reason not-exist but"
Expresses strong disbelief that something is true, often with a defensive or surprised tone. The trailing '-는데' adds a soft contradiction or protest.
걔가 그런 말을 했을 리가 없는데, 진짜야?
There's no way they said that — are you serious?
Scolding or calling someone out
쓸데없이 남 얘기를 하고 다니다
"uselessly other-people's story carry-around"
To needlessly gossip about others. '하고 다니다' adds the sense of doing something repeatedly as a habit while moving around town.
쓸데없이 남 얘기 하고 다니지 마, 나쁜 소문만 돼
Stop going around talking about other people's business — it only spreads bad rumors.
무식하면 용감하다
"if ignorant then brave"
A Korean proverb meaning 'ignorance is bold' — used to call out someone who acts recklessly or offensively because they don't know better. Can be insulting.
뭔 상황인지도 모르고 들이대는 거 보면, 진짜 무식하면 용감하다니까
Watching them charge in without knowing the situation at all — truly, ignorance makes you bold.
Grammar Patterns
-잖아 / -지 않아?
Appealing to shared knowledge or seeking confirmation
'-잖아' is used when the speaker assumes the listener already knows or should acknowledge the stated fact — it carries a 'you know as well as I do' nuance. '-지 않아?' softens the assertion into a tag question, seeking agreement. Both are extremely common in casual Korean conversation.
Practice sentences
어제 내가 분명히 말했잖아
I clearly told you yesterday, you know.
이거 너무 비싸지 않아?
Isn't this way too expensive?
💡 Don't confuse '-잖아' (appealing to shared knowledge) with '-지 않아' (simple negation). The tone and position in the sentence differ.
-(으)ㄹ 리가 없다
Expressing strong disbelief / impossibility
This pattern means 'there is no reason/way that [X] could be true.' It expresses the speaker's confident disbelief or denial of a situation. It frequently appears in contexts where someone is defending themselves or rejecting an accusation.
Practice sentences
걔가 그런 말을 했을 리가 없어, 성격을 생각해 봐
There's no way they said that — think about their personality.
벌써 끝났을 리가 없지, 시작한 지 얼마 안 됐잖아
There's no way it's already over — it only just started.
💡 The verb before '리가 없다' must be in future/prospective form '-(으)ㄹ'. Don't use the past tense '-(으)ㄴ' here unless describing a past completed action.
-는 편이다
Expressing a general tendency or disposition
'-는 편이다' means 'I tend to' or 'I'm on the [X] side.' It softens a statement by framing it as a general tendency rather than an absolute fact. It is frequently used for self-description or describing others' habits in a hedged, face-saving way.
Practice sentences
나는 원래 술을 잘 못 마시는 편이야
I tend not to handle alcohol well.
걔는 말이 없는 편인데 오늘은 좀 달라 보여
She tends to be quiet, but she seems a bit different today.
💡 Use '-는 편이다' for verbs and '-ㄴ/은 편이다' for adjectives. Learners often incorrectly use the verb form with adjectives.
Cultural Notes
해장국 (Hangover Soup) Culture
Eating 해장국 the morning after drinking is a deeply ingrained Korean ritual. The word literally means 'soup to relieve the effects of alcohol.' Common varieties include 선지해장국 (with coagulated blood), 뼈해장국 (bone broth), and 콩나물국 (soybean sprout soup). Debating which type is the 'real' or 'best' version is a popular topic of friendly argument.
주사 (Bad Drunk Behavior)
In Korean, '주사' specifically refers to someone's characteristic bad behavior when drunk — crying, singing, picking fights, becoming clingy, etc. It's treated almost like a personality trait. Saying '나는 주사가 없어' ('I don't have bad drunk habits') is a common form of self-defense in drinking culture.
동네 gossip and the small-town gaze
In dramas set in small Korean seaside villages like Gongjin, the community's involvement in individuals' private lives is depicted as both warm and suffocating. Neighbors watching, commenting on, and teasing couples is portrayed as a sign of communal intimacy — but also a source of social pressure. The term '갤러리' (gallery/spectators) used here humorously acknowledges that their relationship has become public entertainment.
사실 적시 명예 훼손 (Defamation by True Facts)
Unlike in many Western legal systems, South Korean defamation law (명예훼손) can apply even when the stated information is true, if its publication damages someone's reputation without justification. This concept — '사실 적시 명예 훼손' — is a real and frequently debated part of Korean law, and its casual invocation by 화정 here is a humorous flex of legal knowledge in an everyday gossip context.
